Overload vs. Short Circuit: What a Breaker Trip Can Mean

An overload occurs when a circuit carries more current than it is intended to carry. A short circuit is an unintended electrical path. Both can trip protection, but a breaker trip alone cannot tell a homeowner which condition is present.

Note what was running, which rooms lost power, whether the trip repeats, and whether it happens at startup or during use. Those details help identify the right next step.

Heat, burning odor, smoke, sparking, visible damage, or a tingling sensation are reasons to avoid handling equipment and seek qualified help.
